Oset

EN: In the summer they moved all the cows to the moutain lodge (støl) and the area next to what is today Oset Fjellhotell at Golsfjellet. They walked with the cows from Hesla to Oset for 5 hours, and sometimes longer, because the calves ran away and they had to bring them back into the herd. «Stølen» was the farmer’s resort and they lived there all summer. It was crucial for agriculture to survive so high up in the mountains, where the summer was short and grazing was limited.

Per and Guri Nørheim began welcoming summer guests in the 1880s. And they probably liked that. Because in 1890 they started building a boarding house around the upper part of Oset, where they had room for 70-80 guests. Guri was probably the one who was responsible for most of the operation, as it is said that she was the one who “bar brokji”, which means “the one that wears the trousers”.

They sold it on in 1910 to the children of Guri’s brother, and so it was that Knut and Sara took over in 1932. Between 1910 and 1932 it was Knut’s unmarried sister Gunnhild who was the hostess at Oset. Oset has been run by enterprising ladies, and today it is run by the fifth generation, Gudrun Hesla.
